Osborne Junior High Hosts Home Meet

The Osborne Junior High scholars bowl teams hosted five schools at their home meet on Mon., Jan. 30. Visiting teams from Rock Hills, Lakeside, Thunder Ridge, Stockton and Palco competed in ten rounds of questions as they vied for a chance to medal at the local meet. 

Osborne Junior High eighth graders on this year’s team include Saralyn Barfield, Porter Choate, Claire Mick, Leah McKelvey, Aiden Nicholson, and Abbigail Spurgin. Current OJH seventh grade team members are Deecon Dill, Klaire Eilert, Chloe Hougaard, Carson McKelvey, Olivia Mans, and Camrun Taylor. 

Osborne’s eighth grade competed against Palco in round one where the team picked up their first victory 90 - 40. Scoring in the round for OJH were Choate with four, Nicholson with three, and Barfield with two. Against Stockton in round two, OJH pulled off a 65 - 20 victory. L. McKelvey scored three, Nicholson two, and Choate and Barfield each added one apiece to the final total. 

In round three, Osborne faced a tough Rock Hills team, and lost the round 65 - 75. Choate led the scoring with six in the round with help from Nicholson who added one. Next, Osborne played Lakeside in round four and won 75 - 20. Choate scored five for OJH with Nicholson contributing three. The final round of play for OJH resulted in a victory over Thunder Ridge 90 - 50. Choate and Nicholson teamed up scoring four apiece for Osborne while Barfield added one to the team’s total in the final round of the day.

In the varsity/eighth grade division of the meet, Rock Hills took first with a perfect 5-0 win/loss record. Osborne’s 4-1 record was enough for a second place finish at the meet. The remaining three teams finished play with identical 2-3 records. Thus, Thunder Ridge emerged as third place medal winners by virtue of the margin of victory tie breaking method. 

Osborne’s seventh grade team started their season with a win in round one over Palco 60 - 20. High scorer for the team was Dill with three, followed by Mans with two and Taylor with one correct answer. The team’s next round against Stockton resulted in a 100 - 20 victory for the young team. Dill and Taylor each scored four with C. McKelvey adding two to the final total. Against Rock Hills in round three, OJH grabbed a 70 - 60 win as Dill answered the tie breaker question correctly to end the round. Dill scored five in the round with C. McKelvey and Hougaard each adding one apiece. 

Against Lakeside in round four, Osborne lost 10 - 85 as their opponent held them scoreless until near the end of the round. C. McKelvey was the lone scorer for OJH. In the final round of play against Thunder Ridge, Osborne picked up an 80 - 50 victory. OJH scorers were Dill with three, C. McKelvey and Mans with two apiece, and Taylor with one. 

Three teams in the seventh/JV division of the meet finished the day with identical 4-1 win/loss records. Once again, the margin of victory tie breaking method determined placings in the division. Lakeside took home first place medals, with Thunder Ridge grabbing second place, and the young OJH team taking third in their first competition of the season.

Upcoming competition will find OJH at the PTL meet on Mon., Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. at Lakeside Jr/Sr High. Thurs., Feb. 9, both teams will compete at St. John’s of Beloit in a round robin tournament.
