Have you read a book lately? The Osborne Public Library and USD 392 School Library are teaming up to bring a Big Read event to our community in March and April. This is a time when students and members of the community are encouraged to read and discuss the featured book – Wishtree by Katherine Applegate.
While this is the third year for the Big Read at USD 392, 2020 marks the first time that all elementary students are participating. Students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade will receive a personal copy of the book thanks to the generosity of sponsors and donors (Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Osborne Rotary Club, Bonnie Kaser, Sims Fertilizer & Chemical). Previously only third through sixth grade students participated.
The Big Read is also expanding into the community via the Osborne Public Library. Wishtree is the featured book in March and members of the community are encouraged to visit the Osborne Public Library to borrow a copy. In addition, the Library’s book club will be discussing the book Thursday, March 26. All patrons are invited to participate in the book club.
While the featured book is a juvenile fiction title, Wishtree brings relevant subjects to light. Those subjects include diversity, kindness, friendship, and respect. Related activities will be provided for students during the public library’s Wednesday After Class and Tween Scene programs in March.
In addition, a Big Read Community Literacy Night will be held Thursday, April 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the OHS Old Gym. This event will feature family-friendly activities related to Wishtree.
