Outscoring their opponents by a total of 105 points the Osborne High Varsity Scholars Bowl team went home without a medal.  Katzel Carlin, Clay Guttery, Mary Carlin, with help from Grace William, competed in the Phillipsburg Invitational Scholars Bowl, Monday, January 18.  This was an eleven team round robin thus each team had the chance to compete against ten opponents.  The Osborne crew won six of their ten rounds finishing with a 6-4 record for the evening.  However, this made for a five team tie for fourth place.  After application of the tie breaker method outlined in the Scholars Bowl rule book the Osborne team did not earn a medal.  That is one of the curiosities of Scholars Bowl.  It isn't who earns the most points overall, but rather who has the lead at the end of each round.  The Osborne team lost three of their four rounds by ten points which is a single question. Clay Guttery scored the most points with 240 points and Grace William scored the second most points earning 110 points.

Wednesday of the same week, January 24, Katzel Carlin, Clay Guttery, Mary Carlin, Jayla O'Leary, and Porter Choate competed on behalf of the Osborne Bulldogs at the NPL Scholars Bowl hosted by Natoma.  As usual Natoma, with Chris Broeckelman, did a good job.  This competition went well.  The oddity of this Scholars Bowl is that the League wants this Scholars Bowl to occur at 1:30 in the afternoon.  So Natoma had to find a place for their students, including the grade school, to go.  With fourteen teams in the League it made for two pools of seven teams each.  Osborne won three rounds and lost three rounds which wasn't enough to make it to the final rounds.  Clay Guttery again scored the most points for the Osborne Bulldogs with 170 points.  Porter Choate scored the second most points at this League event.

This concludes the Osborne Bulldogs Scholars Bowl regular season competitions.  Thursday, February 1st will be the KSHSAA Regional hosted by Oberlin which will be a bit of a trip.  Last season the Bulldog team won their Regional and then competed at State hosted by Fairfield.  In just a few days we will find out if the Osborne team can earn  another opportunity to compete in the State Competition.    Go Dogs !!!!
