bowl

Paraphrasing Eustace Scrubb from C.S. Lewis' book The Voyage of Dawn Treader, I am finally taking  a moment to  chronicle the OHS Scholars Bowl season thus far. Our first competition occurred on October 24 with a trip to Natoma which enlisted Senior, Katzel Carlin, Junior, Kate Kendig, Sophomores, Jayla O'Leary, and Annie Kendig and Freshman, Porter Choate competing for the Bulldogs. It was a good Scholars Bowl with challenging questions.  The Osborne team was able to best three of their competitors which wasn't enough to make it to the final rounds.  Kate Kendig was the leading scorer for the team.
The following Monday, October 30, Kate Kendig, Annie Kendig, Porter Choate along with Sophomore Ryah Bertuccelli and Freshman Abbi Spurgin sojourned to Lincoln for OHS's second Scholars Bowl regular season competition.  Lincoln acquired their questions from the same company as Natoma and thus the questions were of equal difficulty.  Kate Kendig answered the most questions for the Osborne team but alas the Bulldogs were only able to best two of their opponents.  Stockton also hosted their Varsity Scholars Bowl on October 30.   Mr. Brown volunteered to take Seniors Katzel Carlin, and Wyatt Wilson, Sophomores, Mary Carlin and Jayla O'Leary, and Freshman Aiden Nicholson to the Stockton contest. Katzel Carlin led the team in scoring to help the team out score three of the six opponents they faced but that wasn't enough to earn a medal.  This was a seven team round robin endeavor so there were no final rounds.
This brings us to Tuesday, November 14, and a trip to Tescott for a Varsity Scholars Bowl.  Kate Kendig, Junior, Clay Guttery, Mary Carlin, Annie Kendig and Aiden Nicholson carried the mantle for Osborne High.  Like our previous matches, not very many questions were answered by either team in each round. The Osborne team only answered eighteen questions the entire evening and there were sixteen questions in each of the six rounds they competed.  Therefore, another challenging Scholars Bowl with the OHS team not able to earn a spot in the final rounds.  The team won't have another contest until Monday, December 4 which will be at Hill City.

As in previous years, Osborne High will host a Varsity Scholars Bowl Thursday, January 18, 2024. Fifteen or more schools generally come to this competition.  It takes a number of volunteers to host so many schools.  So if you could help just contact Mrs. Mans in the high school office or contact Mr. Rush by emailing a message to grush@usd392.com.  You will find helping with hosting a Scholars Bowl a worthwhile endeavor, you will have a front row seat in each round along with some snacks to get you going.  The competition will begin at 4:00 pm with instructions for helpers occuring at 3:30 pm. The entire event is usually complete by 7:30 pm.  So if you can help January 18, let us know.  Thanks for your support.
