Groundhog supper

The Groundhog Supper at the United Methodist Church happened on January 28th, 2023. This supper is a yearly tradition that typically takes place towards the end of January. The Osborne UMC Youth groups were responsible for helping by helping people carry trays to their tables. The supper lasted from 5 to 7 and raised $1,040 for the youth Sunday school class field trip. A few years ago the money was used to go to Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City. This year they planned to take a trip to the Salina Mall District Eat and Play. The LaRosh, Schweitzer, Funk, and Mans families all lent a hand in working at the supper. It cost $10 per adult and $5 per child but any donation was accepted.

Biscuits and gravy, eggs, assorted fruits, coffee, and juice were served in the banquet hall of the church. The meal lasted for 2 hours and served roughly 70 people. Pastor Dorothy Ellsworth helped throughout the entire supper. “Seeing how this loving community stops by to support its youth each year is amazing. We appreciate each of you.” Many people from the congregation also helped out. Marsha LaRosh helped in the kitchen by cooking the eggs and biscuits and gravy.  “Putting tradition aside this year, the annual UMC Groundhog supper was a week early and in place of pancakes, the crowd received biscuits and gravy instead.  It was a real success as the UMC youth along with their parents served the meal and at the end, no biscuits or gravy was left!”

The groundhog supper will hopefully continue to be a large part of funding for the youth group field trips in the future. There have always been a good number of people who come and enjoy the meal provided. It is an enjoyable experience that anyone can come to. The church looks forward to sharing this event with the community in future years.
