Hunter's education is now available for Osborne students ages 11 and over. This class is being held once a month in the grade school lunchroom and began in January. The students are learning how to be responsible and safe hunters. They will learn lifelong gun safety skills and hunting ethics from this course.

Hunting is a privilege not a right. Knowing how to have a good public image and being respectful can help prevent having your “right to hunt” provoked. Students will learn the hunting laws and regulations in Kansas. Hunters' education's main goal is to teach students how to be responsible and knowledgeable hunters. Responsible hunting behaviors include hunting fairly, respecting others, following safety rules, obeying hunting laws, and respecting wildlife. Hunters' education can be a good opportunity to encourage new hunters to try the sport.

Jaxton Schweitzer, an 8th grader at Osborne Jr High School, is currently enrolled in the hunters education course at USD 392. In this course, students are learning the basic gun safety skills they will need to shoot a gun. They learn how to load and unload their firearms and how to properly carry them. Jaxton Schweitzer said “I have wanted to take this course for a while but have had trouble finding time to take it. It is nice to have time during school to take this class. I have learned about the big responsibilities I have carrying a firearm. I am excited to learn how to clean and safely store my gun.’’

All hunters ages 16-74 must have a resident hunting license and a minimum of 10 hours.“It is essential to learn how to safely handle a firearm and be an ethical and legal hunter.’’  says Landon Cleveland, the game warden teaching the class. “There are 23 students currently enrolled in the course and they all seem to be using this course to their advantage.”

USD 392 is excited to see how the students will benefit from this course. Landon stated, “ My goal for the future of hunter’s education is to have every school implement it as an optional course, so every student has the opportunity to take it if they would like to.”
