On Thursday, Feb. 9, Osborne Junior High’s scholars bowl teams traveled to St. John’s of Beloit for a pool play tournament. Sixteen teams were divided into two pools of play for varsity and junior varsity competition. Osborne’s eighth grade representatives were: Saralyn Barfield, Porter Choate, Aiden Nicholson, Claire Mick and Abbigail Spurgin. OJH seventh graders playing at the meet were:  Deecon Dill, Klaire Eilert, Chloe Hougaard, Olivia Mans, and Camrun Taylor.

In the eighth grade/varsity division, Osborne played seven rounds with the following results by round:

OJH - 50 vs Tipton - 80  (L)

OJH - 60 vs Republic County - 70  (L)

OJH - 50 vs Thunder Ridge 2 - 40  (W)

OJH - 65 vs Concordia - 40  (W)

OJH - 60 vs Beloit - 50  (W)

OJH - 60 vs Sacred Heart - 70  (L)

OJH - 50 vs St. John’s 2 - 60  (L) 

At the end of varsity pool play, Osborne’s eighth graders’ win/loss record stood at 3-4, short of making it into the semifinal round from their pool. Republic County and St. John’s 2 moved on from the White pool to face Lakeside and Pike Valley from the Blue pool. Following completion of the finals rounds, St. John’s 2 emerged victorious with first place honors followed by Pike Valley, Lakeside and Republic County, respectively, for the remaining places in the division.

Osborne’s seventh grade team also competed in the JV portion of the White pool. OJH JV results by round were:

OJH 7th/JV - 20 vs OJH 8th/V - 50 (called the ‘Chair Round’ - did not count toward pool play)

OJH - 60 vs Beloit - 70 (took 3 tie breaker questions to complete the round) (L)

OJH - 30 vs Sacred Heart - 50 (L)

OJH - 20 vs St. John’s 2 - 95 (L)

The young OJH competitors finished pool play with a 1-5 win/loss record for the day. Sacred Heart and Republic County moved into the semifinal rounds from the White pool. St. John’s 1 and Minneapolis moved into the semifinal rounds from the Blue pool. At the completion of play in the JV division, Sacred Heart took first place. St. John’s 1 grabbed second, Minneapolis finished in third place and Republic County secured fourth to complete the day’s JV competition.

The Osborne teams have a week off before competing again on Thurs., Feb. 23, when they will travel to Northern Valley JH at Long Island for a 4 p.m. round robin meet.
